Jo pursues a better life
Jo joined Sureway Modbury Disability Employment Services (DES) in South Australia almost four years ago.
As former nurse, Jo was experiencing non-vocational barriers and needed an industry change. She was unsure exactly what she wanted to do but was open to expanding her horizons, so she booked herself in to a Workzone Traffic Management Course.
Before she could commence, Jo identified that further work was needed on her current barriers, so a decision was made to put this goal on hold.
Modbury Consultant Lucia supported Jo to work on her self-esteem and motivation, in addition to updating her resume with current and past skills and experience. With a great amount of effort from Jo, she was finally ready to take the leap and start her Traffic Management course, complete with PPE fit-out from Lucia and the team. Jo passed the course with flying colours and had found a new passion.
Together, Jo and Lucia identified and contacted a range of potential employers about work opportunities. Success came from a call back from Emma at Prime Traffic Solutions who was highly impressed with Jo and offered her a Traffic Controller position.
Jo has been gainfully employed by Prime Traffic Solutions now for almost a year. She also is supported by Lucia and Sureway Employment Support Officer Kerri to ensure she has the best supports to succeed.
Jo recently dropped by to tell Lucia and the team that having employment enabled her to pay for herself and her children to go on a holiday and attend a concert. Managing her non-vocational barriers has also helped Jo to give herself and her family a better quality of life.
Jo was also excited to share that her employment with Prime Traffic Solutions led to being approached by another employer, offering her a Traineeship in Heavy Machinery Operation. Lucia and Kerri was able to assist Jo to update her resume so that she could pursue this excellent opportunity.
Lucia said, “Jo spoke about how proud she is of her personal achievements since she started work. We are very proud of Jo as we have seen her grow from someone who was not yet ready to work 4 years ago, to the very confident and proud lady she is today.”
