Gippsland local Cameron has made Work for the Dole work for him, gaining employment with his Host radio broadcaster GippsFM.
When Sureway Morwell first began discussions around his pending Work for the Dole phase requirements Cameron admits he was initially not pleased.
“I had had negative experiences with Work for the Dole with other providers and activities, so I was pretty apprehensive about it to begin with.”
Sureway Morwell Employment Consultant Cassandra Carn said that she could sense Cameron’s uneasiness about the program, but wanted to help him see that Work for the Dole can be an opportunity.
“We got to chatting about his passions and he let me know that he had had some radio training.” Ms Carn said.
“I knew right then that he had to be placed with GippsFM!” she said.
An excellent Work for the Dole host, GippsFM were thrilled to welcome Cameron into their workplace knowing that he had a strong interest in the industry.
It only took a few short weeks for the GippsFM team to start reporting back on Cameron’s excellent performance, and that he was going above and beyond for their organisation.
“I have been working on my ‘on air’ skills a lot, and I’ve learned so many tricks of the trade.” Cameron said about his placement.
Knowing that Cameron’s skills were a perfect fit for their organisation, the team at GippsFM together with Sureway Consultant Kylie O’Connell developed a paid position at the Station that suited Cameron to a tee which he commenced in January 2019.
The GippsFM team say that Cameron has excellent communication skills, and he is only getting better with time and experience.
When asked if his experience had changed his mind about Work for the Dole activities, Cameron encouraged other PARTICIPANTS to get talking and make the most of your chances.
“Try to utilise your passions in your conversations with your Consultant so that tailored servicing can happen.” He said.
“(My Consultant) Cass always said that you get out what you put in. If you aren’t 100% committed to making things work for you then generally they won’t.”
“Without this Work for the Dole program I know I would not have had the opportunity to work within this industry, prove myself and continue in it.”
Now working in his dream job thanks to Work for the Dole, Sureway and GippsFM plus much of his own hard work, Cameron had one last piece of advice for other PARTICIPANTS.
“Chase down your dreams and stand for nothing less.”
