Nicholas lands his dream job
19-year-old Nicholas was diagnosed with Autism at a young age.
In late 2019, the high school graduate successfully gained his Forklift licence and was eager to find employment where he could develop this new skill. Feeling that he was not gaining the support he needed from his previous Provider despite expressing his desire to work, Nicholas transferred to Sureway Wodonga DES services.
With his new Sureway consultant, Nicholas discussed his employment goals and his desire to work in an outdoor or industrial setting. Keen to keep fit and be outdoors, he decided a role in landscaping would be his ‘dream job’.
Nicholas’ consultant approached local labour hire companies and landscaping businesses to seek out opportunities that would suit his skill set and limited worksite experience. A successful connection was made with David – the Director at Peards Landscaping Supplies who agreed to take Nicholas on for a two week trial.
Nicholas developed his skills in loading and unloading materials, industrial worksite cleaning and equipment operation. Nicholas made such an impression that he moved straight from the trial into permanent employment!
‘I was fortunate enough to be there when David and his team told Nicholas the exciting news,’ his Consultant said. ‘He was absolutely over the moon!’
