David Callahan – Rebuilding Confidence Through Career Transition Assistance
When David commenced the Career Transition Assistance (CTA) program at Sureway Employment and Training, he brought with him a positive attitude and a quiet determination to re-enter the workforce. Having last held paid employment in 2009, David initially felt uncertain about his direction and how to present his experience to potential employers.
Throughout the CTA program, David attended every session with consistency and a willingness to learn. While he began the course unsure of which industry to pursue, discussions and self-reflection during the program helped him identify warehousing as a natural fit, drawing on his previous experience and practical strengths.
It quickly became clear that obtaining a forklift licence would significantly enhance his employability within the warehousing sector. With encouragement and guidance, David enrolled and successfully completed his forklift training following the program.
One of David’s early concerns was updating his résumé after a long period out of paid work. He openly shared his uncertainty but carefully listened to advice, followed the guidance provided and applied himself to improving his applications. His confidence steadily grew as he recognised the value of his existing skills and transferable experience.
David’s commitment extended beyond his own development. During the CTA course, he regularly supported fellow participants who were experiencing difficulties, assisted with packing up equipment and maintained a consistently respectful and cooperative attitude. He was a valued presence within the group.
Armed with his newly obtained forklift licence and renewed confidence, David broadened his job search and applied for a warehousing role in Albury, demonstrating his willingness to travel for the right opportunity. In October 2025, he successfully secured full-time employment as a storeman and driver.
David has since shared that gaining his forklift licence “really opened up his options”, providing access to roles that may not have previously been available to him. Most importantly, he has achieved stable, sustainable employment in an industry aligned with his experience.
David’s journey highlights the impact of structured support, targeted training and encouragement. Through the Career Transition Assistance program, practical upskilling and personalised guidance, Sureway Employment and Training helped David rebuild his confidence and take meaningful steps back into the workforce.
His story is a testament to the power of persistence, lifelong learning and the right support at the right time.
